:: Where You Know Everyone's Name ::
I haven't really had a place to go to where I've been a "regular" since the aforementioned brew.net coffeehouse back in my early college days but since moving here, I have several. What's funny is that it's a happy accident resulting from my lack of a TV and Internet at home. I should have known that lacking such amenities would force me out of my apartment and, well, meet people.

One place I use to frequent to watch sports, get food, and do homework was this place called the Irish House. Dark, smoky, with a grimy feel but they served great bar food (wings, burgers, hot dogs, onion rings) and a great beer selection. Happy hour deals were totally awesome. The only thing this place was missing was sawdust on the floor. I'd catch the occasional nationally televised Lakers game and do homework during commercial breaks and halftime. I still surprise myself at how productive I can be in front of a TV, drinking a beer, watching a game. Unfortunately, this place is closed now.

While I have web access at school, they're closed most of the weekend and I still need to do stuff. In which case I just mosey on over to Taste Bakery, (a block away from my place) where the sandwiches are in fact, tasty as well as overpriced but they make up for it by offering free wireless access (unlike say, Starbucks where they charge you a ridiculous $29.95 a month). This place has good coffee as well as some of the best muffins I've ever had anywhere.

Across the street is a fairly new bar called Dewey's. Dark, not as smoky and pretty clean and employed almost entirely by women wearing black. They have six small flatscreens mounted behind the bar and one huge plasma TV that I'm planning on stealing one of these days. They just opened their kitchen and while the food isn't quite as good as that from the Irish House, it's cheaper and still pretty decent. They have a pretty good beer selection though for some inexplicable reason, they still haven't installed taps. It's offset by the fact that all the bartenders are women. Wait, I already mentioned that.

I've been to all these places enough to know when it gets slow, which is when I prefer it anyway. Believe it or not I actually do a lot of stuff for school there and I do appreciate distractions being kept to a minimum.

About that whole "meet people" thing; I think I'm on a first name basis with almost everyone that works at these places. Theresa and Todd worked at the Irish House; Sandra, Vera (I think... she’s new), Alex, and Will at Taste; Jackie, Kelly, Sophie, Michelle, and Kathy at Dewey's. And I'm forgetting someone.

If I knew their last names, that'd just be weird.
