:: Monday, June 23, 2003 ::

I enjoyed a very relaxing day at the beach last Saturday and the main thought going through my head at the moment is "the day didn't last long enough." That and "my contacts are kinda foggy." A few friends from the C/A group got together at Huntington Beach to throw a combined farewell/birthday party for a couple of guys. The day started inauspiciously enough with a mild drizzle in the morning which caused some initial concern about canceling but. It only rained in parts of LA so Orange County remained dry enough, though the June gloom would still be in full effect. I was still cloudy when I arrived at the beach around 1:30 but the sun finally peaked out around 3:30 - 4:00-ish and it warmed up quite nicely. We made the most of it with your typical beach activities; football, playing catch, barbecue, cooking smores over a bonfire, etc. The two guests of honor felt... well... honored, though we skipped the traditional "dunking of the guest of honor." It was a great day.

So I find it odd that the most memorable moment for me would be a few minutes I spent alone enjoying the sunset. (Not that hanging out with my friends wasn't fun, quite the contrary. I'm just one who really values alone time.) I brought my guitar along with me in case people wanted to do a campfire style sing-along. During a break in the action I grabbed my guitar, went to a quite spot away from everyone, sat back against a post, and practiced some songs while enjoying the view. It was actually kinda reminiscent of the Sheryl Crow video for "Soak up the Sun?" where she's in beach wear sitting on the sand while strumming along on her guitar - a beautiful Gibson J200 - lookin' all sexy and stuff. Except it wasn't Ms. Crow, it was scruffy ol' me playing my rather plain Yamaha. (And not one single hot blonde surfer girl to be seen anywhere.) But in my mind, it was one of those priceless "I need to do this more often" moments. It also seems like sunsets are more beautiful when strumming along to Sarah Mclachlan's "Drawn to the Rhythm" playing in my head. I don't know, I've been so busy with life lately that I haven't had a chance to enjoy some of the simple pleasures of life; playing my guitar, etc. I think I need a long vacation.
